13.4. ASH BORER / FELL VOICES / A STORY OF RATS / BIRD PEOPLE

ash_borer_medium_image

Emerging as one of the most revered new bands within the ever polarizing movement of this present day American black metal scene, Ash Borer are a band that will be known as of the pillars within the genre. Through violent waves of harsh virulent sonic ambiance, the time-expanding songs that Ash Borer manifest hold true to a certain aspect of the essence of black metal; on a sonic level Ash Borer’s brand of unearthly trance-inducing ambient black metal holds its own ground by upholding the genre’s aesthetic, while on a lyrical and thematic level, Ash Borer do touch upon subjects that deal with spiritual themes and religious initiation, all while harboring that slight aura of mystique and mysticism they also present.

Nonetheless, “Cold Of Ages”  is a surging and hypnotizing sonic pillage that stands as one of the defining moments of America’s present-day black metal scene.

Fell Voices sound is totally unvarnished, part of the current U.S. black metal trend away from stylistic experimentation and focusing on furious, blasting black metal with excellent musicianship and extremely gritty production.

They use droning repetitive parts to creative a mesmerizing backdrop for their aggression and fury, with craftily hidden melodic changes to maintain interest over the course of their album-side length tracks.

6.5. FATSO JETSON / YAWNING MAN / BEEN OBSCENE

fatsojetsonlogo1

Fatso Jetson was formed in Palm Desert, CA, in 1994 and are often credited as one of the fathers of Desert Rock . Fatso Jetson incorporate a broad variety of musical influences that includes punk, blues, jazz and rock music. prone to experiment with many musical textures, angular instrumental epics, and bizarre lyrics to create a punk, blues art rock all their own.

fatsojetsonpromo

In 1995, the group recorded their debut “Stinky Little Gods” and followed that up in 1997 with “Power of Three” — both discs appeared on SST Records.

The band then teamed up with Bongload Records (Beck) who then released thier third full-length disc, “Toasted”, in 1998. The album produced by Chris Goss (Masters of Reality, Queens of the Stone Age).

fatsojetsontoasted

The fourth LP was “Flames for All” in 2000 for Artist Frank Kozik’s Mans Ruin Label . Fatso Jetson also contributed to “The Desert Sessions” releases that Josh Homme (Kyuss,Queens of the Stone Age) . At these sessions Mario Lalli co-wrote two songs with Homme (“You think I aint worth a dollar but I feel like a Millionaire” and “Monster in the Parosol”) these would eventualy make their way on to the Queens of the Stone Age albums “Rated R” and “Songs for the Deaf”

It was Homme’s record lable Rekords Rekords that would release the next Fatso album in 2001 “Cruel and Delicious”. For this session the band was joined by Vince Meghrouni (Bazooka, Mike Watt, BellRays) on Sax and harp adding a new dimention to Fatso’s hard to pin sound.

The band continues with this line up in 2013.

Influenced by everything from the psychedelic to the folkloric, jazz, hard rock, roots punk, world music, the sound of this trio while hard to describe is visual and cinematic , heavy and melancholy. driving & daydreaming.

yawningman

Yawning Man are quite a different musical beast from those they inspired. Drawing heavily from the SST roster of artists which set the world ablaze in the 1980s – Black Flag, Minutemen, Meat Puppets – their music is caught in the nexus of surf, psychedelia, Krautrock and the Spaghetti Western soundscapes of Ennio Morricone. Or, if you will, a missing link between the worlds of Dick Dale, Syd’s ‘Floyd, instrumental Black Flag and Pell Mell.

Now, well more than twenty years later, Yawning Man still is going strong; not specifically the band itself as a name, but as that which inspired and drove the members thereof to do what they do, which is an innate drive to create and connect landscapes of the real to surreal- the end result being the beautiful, swirling and other-worldly music you know as Yawning Man

After opening for Brant Bjork and The Bros and two headlining show Been Obscene will embark on a Roadtrip To Outta Space once again.

The 4-piece from Salzburg, Austria is signed to Elektrohasch Records and turned heads in the international Stoner- and Psychedelic-Rock scene, releasing two full length LP within two years.

“Been Obscene has shown an impressive amount of development – the instrumentalization has moved up a few notches at once, the drumming has taken a flying leap forward and the psychedelic and post-rock pastures are spread more evenly and enhances the flavor quite a bit. The album is much more vocal-driven than the previous one, but that doesn’t mean the instrumental passages have lessened. In fact, the instrumental passages have, if anything, grown more complex, with at least two instances of multi-layered, psychedelic pastures being explored in what are otherwise pretty straightforward songs. This provides the record with enough dynamism to engage you, but keeps it from going places that will lose you on the way – and, might I add, the atmosphere built is a lot darker and more brooding than you’d expect….”

29.4. DANAVA / LECHEROUS GAZE

Danava State Fair Bootleger T-Shirt Proof#2
From their initial appearance on Kemado’s famed Invaders comp, Danava turned heads with a bombastic ’70s sound that melded blazing psych-metal with glam-rock flair. Upon the release of the band’s self-titled debut EP in 2006, Pitchfork hailed Danava as true leaders, calling them ‘the sole working owners of this sound, an almost glam-rock, Hawkwind thing’ and Guitar World lauded their ‘chaotic psych-metal brew.'”

Although Danava play the type of ferociously intense, foundation-rattling, rock and roll that might righteously justify some good old fashioned head-banging, vocalist Dusty Sparkles wants you to know that he doesn’t consider his band a metal outfit.
Nor are they prog-rock, or part of whatever ridiculous, wonky sounding “movement” someone just came up with to try to lump a bunch of disparate bands together.

danava-on-black1

Danava have always been able to separate themselves from other Iommi-inspired retro rockers by infusing an unabashed weirdness into all that they do. Hemisphere of Shadows, the Portland band’s third full length and first since 2008’s UnonoU, is no exception, and, in fact, the addition of a second guitarist (Andrew Forgash) means the blitzkrieg of riffs are now twined-out to inflict a maximum assault of strange. With a much shorter run-time than previous albums and a decidedly tighter focus, Hemisphere of Shadows finds Danava reigning in their druggy psych-metal jams without strangling them, and without stripping them of their cosmic, downer, prog, and occult flourishes.

16.4. ELDER / PET THE PREACHER

Elder_logo
Crushing and destroying everything in its path comes the newest offering from Massachusetts´ Elder. Like a trip into ancient times of barbarism with enough psychedelics to last you ´til the Middle Ages. Elder is a potent concoction of swirling, groovy, heavy-as-shit riffs, pounding percussion, and heathen vocal work destined to please the gods of holy smoke. Bringing forth a saga of varied and nefarious hymns, Elder conquered new territory in 2012 with the arrival of “Spires Burn/Release”, a timeless, soon-to-be classic record of psychedelic doom.

25.4. MOSS / WITCHSORROW

mosslogo
CONGREGATION RISE,
MOSS HERALD THE COMING OF THE NEW DARK AGE

Moss first cracked the earth in the bleak summer of 2001 –  born from a sickening lust of horror, drugs, insane occult visions and a desire to create the heaviest fucking doom metal anti-music of all time.

mossrecording

Early years spawned rare live performances scattered with limited runs of cassettes and cdr split demos, before the release of the monolithic debut album Cthonic Rites on Christmas Day, 2005.

Produced by Electric Wizard’s Jus Oborn, Cthonic Rites took the listener on a journey from the bowels of the earth to the farthest reaches of space and back, heralding the coming of ancient elder Gods through two massive slabs of bleakly magnificent, mind-controlling death sludge.

There followed 3 years of self-inflicted silence. The only signs of life being a limited 7″ split with Monarch and an impossibly rare and dangerously packaged re-release of the 2002 Tormented demo.

2008: Moss return on Rise Above Records with their second album, SUB TEMPLUM. Nocturnally recorded deep in the mystical Welsh valleys and once again overseen by Jus Oborn, Sub Templum is an immense opus of occult hypnosis inspired by the macabre, masonry, marijuana and Doris ZORA Norton. A terrifying work of uncompromisingly cryptic enormity, Sub Templum will ruin “extreme” doom metal for everyone.

MOSS_Sub_Templum_cover_art
Rather than trying to progress their sound, Tombs of the Blind Drugged simply restates Moss’ already successful formula of tormented shrieks over slow and devastating riffs. The typical overwhelming track lengths are somewhat absent, and with the slightly heightened accessibility of shorter tracks, Tombs of the Blind Drugged is all the more inviting.

Moss have finished recording their latest sick Doom offering to be titled Moss’s Horrible Night. Rise Above Records is aiming for a February 2013 release.

WITCHSORROW LOGO
According to Witchsorrow main man Nick; “I think we sit on the outside. I’ve always had a bit of a distaste for the more jock end of the metal spectrum, where it’s all Jagermeister, tits and clowning around. We’re not like that. I don’t think we could be considered ‘cool’ or anything, I just want the music to be a cauldron of bad vibes to tip over the audience, really”.

Embracing the spirit of the second wave of post 70’s bands that defined the genre, England’s Witchsorrow echo the mournful cries of St. Vitus, Trouble, Candlemass and more recent masters, Reverend Bizarre.

witchsorrow2

Don’t expect anything radically new or particularly original, as that’s not really
the point. Yes, the usual themes of Witches being burned at the stake, sorcery and sin are all here but done with such a passion that conviction supersedes any sense of pretence. Heavy they are and here they are; Witchsorrow. Doom or be Doomed!

1.5. AMENRA / SYNDROME / IRON HEEL

amenra-logo
Formed in the forsaken fields of West-Flanders Belgium, Amenra has been conjuring unholy masses and paving their own headstrong way since 1999. Spreading their vision of a world that’s out of touch with its past, present and future, they take their adepts through a world of unseen mystique.

amenra-stage
The magnificence of certain bands sometimes needs the grandeur of big words. In Amenra’s case it’s extremely tempting to use every superlative in the book, but in the vein of the attitude that is pouring out of the band’s every pore, here’s to keeping it modest. Amenra have been paving their own headstrong way in the 12 years since their inception, from overlooked releases and poorly attended show to critically acclaimed albums, sold out shows and the utmost respect of their listeners, peers and even heroes. Always putting heart and soul into every note, word and image and changing the course of people’s lives everywhere their path leads them.

Recent history has shown an extremely confident and focused Amenra. Besides touring on their own and with Neurosis, the band has been branching out and taking modest steps onto –for the band– virgin territory. They have released an acoustic record, compiled a book, dare I say bible, thereby vulnerably offering their heart and inspiration to those inspired by them, took part in various art exhibitions and held the now legendary “23.10” concert which was later followed by a live DVD and a slew of split releases with audio from this concert, all the while constantly gaining followers, members of the Church Of Ra, a sect, now thousands in numbers. In the last months Amenra’s eyes have been directed straight at the future.

Close to a decade ago a primitive form of Syndrome was brought to life as a vehicle for the solo output of Mathieu Vandekerckhove, mostly known for his work with Amenra,Kingdom,Sembler Deah,… For years the self-taught musician learned and studied his craft of songwriting and sound scaping, mainly as a means to self exploration, meditation and attempts at channelling negative into positive energy, this while staying below the surface at all times.

2012 marked a turning point for Mathieu Vandekerckhove and Syndrome as he steps forward, with the epic 28 minute long “Now And Forever”. Dedicated to his son Wolf, this track offers words of guidance and will grant you a look into the heart and soul of the artist. Close your eyes and hear the beating heart of pure artistic freedom.

Mono++Europe+Tour+20122013+Bratislava+402403_449447975092347_1899802

Throughout their l career, MONO has ascended consistently in both popularity and critical acclaim, with record sales and live show attendance corresponding. Successfully translating their powerful and violently beautiful live performances on record is no easy feat. Despite their albums’ masterful subtleties and majestic walls of noise, the consensus had remained that their transcendent live show are simply insurmountable.

MONO
“Mono may not make many new fans with this release, but those they have will enjoy it fully. The band has progressed to a point where their work sounds unique, and now they’ll continue to painstakingly develop every aspect of that work with each release. To the uninitiated, *For My Parents* will sound just like all those other records with the silly long song titles on them. To those who care about the small differences, it’s another tremendously strong album from a career already littered with them.”

When it comes to stoner, doom, post experimental stuff, advant-garde noise, heavy psychedelia and call-it-what-you-want-bastards, ROADTRIP TO OUTTA SPACE has proven to be a recipe for the  best shows the beautiful city of Vienna, Austria has seen over the course of 5 years now.

Under these circumstances RTTOS is throwing  a party and it´s FREE.

Expect three exceptional Live Acts, a DJ Line that will crush you into pieces (low frequencies, stoner hooks, heavy shit, vhs-horror-disco soundtracks from technicolor-hell) and visuals that will have you pinch yourself wondering if “this is real life…”

On Stage:

The term Samsara is derived from “to flow together,” to go or pass through states, to wander. Mostly a great revolving door between life and death and a new life reincarnated cycle of life.

Samsara Blues Experiment are a Berlin based band, founded in Summer 2007 by leadguitarist/singer Christian Peters. As the band name implies three elemental aspects are to notice – the blues as the fundament where it all comes from, the inclusion of spiritual influences accompanied by Indian/raga music and the experimental approach to mix up varied elements in a convincing manner.

The band’s songs are dominated by a playful dual guitar work as well as a passionate blend of heavy psych, stoner and space rock.

Mars Red Sky stoke the fire of a voodoo mass with their 70’s old school riffs and their psychedelic groove.

Mars Red Sky have one of the most dragging grooves out there… If you start listen to them, you will be captured in an not ending rhythm cycle. At home you have to crank up the volume to the maximum, to get the whole experience; live they are taking care of that issue for you.

www.facebook.com/marsredskyband

After one year of work, Sex On The Beach now release their debut album “POWER” on Noise Appeal Records. Not a single song on this record uses a conventional structure and time after time new surprises gently caress the listener. SOTB took away the noise from noise rock to endow it with more force; gave sterile electronic music some life to make it more savory for long-haired rockers wearing leather jackets. Dull conceptionalism gets what it deserves… – because it’s not about jagged sketches, it’s much rather about – POWER.

“Their work rests on minimalistic, danceable, robotic and rockistic roots influenced by Krautrock, Heavy Metal, Progpop up to electronic music. Someone listening in closely finds reminiscences in all possible directions, from the front, from behind, sideways. ”

3.12. THE DEVIL´S BLOOD / ATTIC

“We will serve you with what can best be described as a Satanic Ritual in which crowd participation becomes pivotal. You will wear our blood, you will taste our hunger, you will devour our spiritual release. Although far above you and unattainable for you in the current stages of your evolution, We, the acolytes of His immortal will, welcome you to join us in a night of violence, substance abuse, love and hate. We would just as gladly be a place of worship, a church if you will, for true believers as we would be a left hand exit point for those still on the side of the pure and holy. We would take your offering and redirect it back into The Source of Darkness.”

What can you expect musically? Without saying too much, or saying nothing at all, you can expect a frenzy of rock n roll flavoured hard rock that speak of times decades past, no modernisms, no trends, no high end sounds. Just Vintage rock music in the vein of Roky Erickson, Black Widow, Coven, Black Sabbath and a rich plethora of sixties and seventies undergound psychedelic rock bands too numerous to mention.

Although The Devil’s Blood are inspired and fueled by their love for these bands they are not a tribute band in any way or form. Instead we offer new, original, fresh material to strengthen our live rituals and appease our Master’s senses. So even though The Devil’s Blood play “old time music” they do it with the same creative and artistic drive as their inspirators.

Attic from Germany are a real heavy metal band, if you like anything from Mercyful Fate to Venom then you need to check this band out. The debut EP is in good old cassette tape format, the sound quality may be fading, but the music shines through. Clenching your fist is the result of some massive evil, eerie guitar notes that intertwine with often epic and falsetto vocal lines, the band are routed in the graveyard, their dark uninhabited or haunted forest and this really suits this style of music, especially the impression gained from the cassettes artwork.

11.11. THE SKULL (legendary TROUBLE Line Up) / HORISONT / HONG FAUX

No band deserves as much credit for keeping the gospel of classic Black Sabbath-derived heavy metal (not to mention bell-bottoms) alive during the ’80s as Chicago’s Trouble. And while the group’s legend never exceeded cult status, their work would serve as inspiration for an entire generation of ’90s bands in the thriving underground doom/stoner metal scene. Trouble was formed in 1979 by vocalist Eric Wagner, guitarists Bruce Franklin and Rick Wartell, bassist Sean McAllister, and drummer Jeff Olson. Drawing deeply from Black Sabbath for inspiration (with occasional nods to the psychedelic sounds of the late ’60s thrown in for good measure), the band forged an uncompromising brand of classic metal all their own, made more unique by their gloomy down-tuned riffs and spiritual lyrics….

The band toured throughout the Midwest during the early ’80s before signing with Metal Blade Records and releasing their amazingly mature eponymous debut (later referred to as PSALM 9) in 1984. The equally impressive (and even more depressing) THE SKULL followed in 1985 and reflected singer Wagner’s struggles with substance abuse as well as the growing turmoil within the group.

A three year haitus followed. Luckily, just when it seemed that Trouble’s fortunes had run out, the band was snapped up by Rick Rubin’s visionary Def American Records for whom they recorded another self-titled album (TROUBLE) in 1990 with Rubin in the producer’s chair.

More experimental than previous efforts, the album (featuring new drummer Barry Stern) expanded upon the group’s tentative psychedelic notions of the past while abandoning none of their thunderous power chords. Encouraged by a euphoric response from the media, the revitalized group embarked on a year-long tour, expanded their fan base considerably, and returned to the studio with every intention of making their next album the one that would push them over the edge. Sure enough, 1992’s stunning MANIC FRUSTRATION realized all their creative ambitions, delving even deeper into Beatlesque psychedelia and featuring some of Trouble’s most aggressive, energetic performances ever. But when the album still failed to connect with a wider audience (due perhaps to the grunge revolution that made metal a bad word in 1992), it seemed that Trouble had apparently missed their last window of opportunity.

2012 marks the year in which the legendary Line Up of Trouble resurfaces under the moniker of The Skull – playing the Legendary first 2 TROUBLE albums

The Skull is here to do one thing… rock you with the sounds and spirit of Trouble – past- present- future

From Gothenburg, Sweden, hails vintage hard rockers Horisont. With their mix of the early 70’s heavy rock/metal and NWOBHM they have found their own genuine sound. Their debut album was released in 2009 by Crusher Records and have since then been out touring heavily. In 2011 they were signed by legendary Rise Above Records and are now ready to face the crowd with new material.

“Old school super sludgy riffology with blues wailin’ vox”. It would be foolish to argue against such a statement. You’ll find the sound that brought together four guys with very diverse musical tastes and backgrounds. One of the things the band members all dig on the same level is the harder bands that came out of Seattle in the early nineties. So, all put together, with a few added ingredients, you get the heavy stoner riff galore with strong melodic vocal parts that honor the harmonic complexity of the grunge era.
