30.6. UNSANE / BIG BUSINESS / SUMA

New York City’s Unsane assisted in pioneering a more aggressive, less studied version of noise rock, one that blended the scum/art industrial sturm und drang of Foetus, the Swans, Einsturzende Neubauten, and Sonic Youth with the decidedly more straightforward hardcore idiom favored by acts like Sick of It All. While developing the blueprint for noise-metal bands to follow, Unsane cut a remarkable swath through underground music, inspiring a devoted, cult-like following around the globe.

As a power trio, Unsane relied upon a hammering, power-press rhythm section, a searing Telecaster howl, and distorted vocals that resembled nothing if not the sound of a man trapped in the New York Subway system.

1994 found the band recording its first for Atlantic Records, Total Destruction, a menacing, dark collection of songs driven by Signorelli’s hypnotic drumming and Spencer’s man-pushed-to-the-edge vocals. More touring followed and Matador released the Peel Sessions disc almost concurrently with Total Destruction. After being discharged from Atlantic in 1994, Unsane found both a new bass player in Dave Curran — who joined on tour while doing sound for the band — and a home for their next album, Scattered, Smothered, and Covered, on the independent noise rock label, Amphetamine Reptile Records. While maintaining the band’s signature sound and volume, 1995’s Scattered… showed the band opening their rhythmic approach, with most songs inhabiting a more rock-oriented 4/4 pattern, granting the album a more spacious and controlled feel.

Scattered… also contained the unlikely MTV hit video for “Scrape”

After a lot of touring, contracts with numerous labels and some introspection, they unleashed the band’s 7th full length ‘Wreck’ on Alternative Tentacles Records in 2012. For over two decades they have represented a harsh, aggressive, honest, and intelligent voice of New York’s Lower East Side.

Strange but true: While on a press tour in Europe only a month prior to the disc’s release, Spencer was brutally attacked by street thugs and left for dead on the streets of Vienna, Austria. After emergency surgery, he returned to the touring arena.

What has Big Biz been up to lately? I heard they spend all day huffing gold spray paint. I’ve also heard they had a collective freak-out and ran off to join the touring company of Burning Man: The Musical. My friend heard they’re still embroiled in that Joe Rogan/Cameron Diaz lawsuit (DON’T ASK!). Rumors rumors rumors! There are some questions that not even a computer or fancy phone can answer. When asked to comment, Big Business will only respond that they’ve been busy “going viral”, whatever that means. What we do know is that Big Business has a new guitar player. That makes them a four-piece band now. No screwing around! Said shredder is named Scott Martin. He’s practically an LA legend, spending his young and handsome years playing with Crom and 400 Blows, among others. He’s reportedly a terrible influence on Big Biz, but a fantastic guitar player that really makes the band “pop”. He has hardly any kids or STDs. We also know they’re releasing a four-song 12-inch slab of vinyl for their tour with Torche on their very own label, Gold Metal Records. With all those facts, what else could you possibly want to know? That they’re a loud, gold-metal band that lives in LA? That they have three full length records out already? That they are all 23 years old and born on the exact same day? All you need to know is that the kids who are much younger/cooler than you are spending all their time texting and tweeting about Big Biz and you don’t want to seem like some out-of-the-loop old fart.

Hailing from Malmö, Sweden – Suma is a ultra-megaton Doom / Noise / Sludge outfit that has been ploughing through the European landscapes for the past eight years, spreading the “plague of the heavy” and converting many diverse music fans with it’s progressive, hallucinatory metal.

Formed in 2001, the band’s music is made by combining crushing instrumentation, phantasmal vocals and blistered samples into “a high volume WALL of noise”.

For the recording of SUMA’s third album, ASHES – the band once again – after a very successful recording of their sophmore album, LET THE CHURCHES BURN – teamed up with legendary engine-ear BILLY ANDERSON (MELVINS, NEUROSIS, SLEEP, EYEHATEGOD) to put the songs to tape. The result – “an addictive, sick, mean and beautiful monster of a record” that delivers a catastrophic cacaphony of rumbling reverberations and booming brouhaha that will have fans of exploratory sound and brawny heavy rock in a condition of excited distress, to say the very least.

17.10. BABY WOODROSE / CACHIMBO DE PAZ

The Danish band Baby Woodrose has capped its connection to the present long ago! They can equally master late 60s Garage Rock, delicate Psych-Folk as well as raw and psychedelic early 70s Hard Rock. Old fashioned yet timeless, forceful and brute.
In concert Baby Woodrose is a heavy and hallucinating psychedelic rock monster, who named itself after a Hawaiian climbing plant, which produces the highly psychoactive substance LSA, a chemical relative of LSD.

Singer, guitarist and songwriter Lorenzo Woodrose, the mastermind
behind Baby Woodrose, must be considered the undisputed godfather
of the Danish Garage Rrock scene. From 1996 to 2003 he playe
drums with the Psych-Stoner pioneers On Trial before starting Baby
Woodrose in 2001, first as a heavy power trio and since 2009 as a
quartet featuring a second guitar.

Since then the band has plowed its way through the international
Psych, Stoner and Garage Rock scene, releasing eight albums,
playing more than 400 international concerts including appearances at
Roskilde Festival, Roadburn, SXSW, Rockpalast and Duna Jam.

April 2012 will see the realease of the ninth Baby Woodrose album
“Third Eye Surgery” on Bad Afro Records.

Cachimbo de Paz from Vienna, Austria are to be located within the stoner spectrum. Heavily fuzzed and distorted guitars combined with thick, gritty vocals that border on sludge territory. Instead of keeping the heavy guitars as the focus and just beating your head in with them, Cachimbo work in some softer, almost psychedelically styled licks and interludes.

Cachimbo de Paz recently released a split LP with Parasol Caravan.

4.6. HARVEY MILK

Harvey Milk is  is the difference between watching a movie like Irreversible vs. watching a movie like Independence Day. Both good films, however the first stimulates a foreign mixture of emotions that require you to sleep it off, whereas the latter concludes with you feeling comfortable with the fact that you’re a lazy, wasteful, culturally sequestered Westerner who has sat through this fucking movie way too many times in his/her life!

A monument to unfettered originality on all fronts, at times fragile, minimal, and achingly beautiful; other times it suffocates with tar-black, crushingly heavy dirges that bend time. The tension that permeates the arrangements is exhausting, and the heart-on-a-sleeve vocals of Creston Spiers are truly gut-wrenching. Simply-stated: unprecedented, uneasy listening that walks the finest of lines between difficulty and beauty.

16.5. JEX THOTH

Epic and haunting 70′s tinged Doom the Jex Thoth way, meaning you have never heard anything like this before. Down tuned guitars with a strong leaning towards late-60ies-psychedelia mingle with Jex Thoth’s clear, divine vocals.

Unlike your usual Retro-Occult-Rock forerunners Ghost and The Devil´s Blood, Jex Thoth don´t have to rely on a flashy blood-harvest / devil-worship – gimmick to deliver with devastating effect.

Jex Thoth are openly nostalgic without being sentimental or trite. The band’s biggest strengths are the haunting vocals of Jex and avoiding the usual trap of carbon copying its predecessors.

Alchemical Doom is imminent !

12.4. CORROSION OF CONFORMITY / BLACK COBRA / ZOROASTER / ARABROT / MOSE GIGANTICUS

The esteemed Animosity line-up of vocalist/bassist Mike Dean, guitarist Woody Weatherman, and drummer/vocalist Reed Mullin – has been working with long-time producer John Custer. Now nearly complete, their still untitled eighth studio album is planned for release in 2012.

Gathering last summer to jam as a trio for the first time in over a decade, the treasured threesome quickly rekindled the magic that originally united and ultimately bound the musicians on a journey that today continues to impress both fans and critics. It is the efforts of this line-up that Decibel Magazine recently called “a crucial stylistic linchpin in the bridge between metal and punk.

Corrosion of Conformity irrevocably reshaped crossover’s sonic possibilities.” AllMusic.com notes, ”C.O.C. weren’t following any trends. They just incorporated all the things they liked about thrash, punk and ’70s metal originators Black Sabbath into their constantly evolving sound. It secured them artistic and commercial credibility.”
www.coc.com

Formed by drummer Rafa Martinez (ex-16, ex-Acid King) and guitarist/vocalist Jason Landrian (ex-Cavity), Black Cobra catapulted themselves onto the scene in 2001 with their ravenous, upbeat and ultimately unique style of punk/hardcore-fueled sludge metal.

Black Cobra´s almighty fourth full-length album, “Invernal” is their most honed and diversified material to date, and will definitely tear your face off completely. Balck Cobra has been touring relentlessly the past years, most recently as support for the entire Kyuss Lives!-US-Tour.

Zoroaster’s heady mix of mammoth metal and psychotropic shoegaze has seen the trio hailed as “one of the U.S.’s most promising metal bands” and it has receiving shining praise for its explosive power, intriguing mysticism and unique take on heavy music.

Summoned by the mighty sludge of The Melvins, the mysticism of Celtic Frost and the nihilistic blues of Black Sabbath, Zoroaster formed in 2003 out of “the need for sedation by high volumes and low frequencies”. The band immediately began creating devastating, dirge-ridden doom that erupted into heavyweight grooves andranscendental musical atmospheres. Zoroaster’s early sound was compared to “having 10,000 ton granite slabs dropped on your head from a height of several miles”.

Årabrot is a Norwegian noise-rock band from Haugesund, Norway.
Since starting out in 2001, Årabrot’s main core has been Kjetil Nernes (songwriter, guitar and vocals) and Vidar Evensen (drums and visuals), and in recent years noise artist Stian Skagen has been a regular on-and-off member of the band. Collaborating with producers such as Billy Anderson (Melvins, Neurosis), Emil Nikolaisen (Serena Maneesh) and Steve Albini (Nirvana, High on Fire) the band has released three full-length albums and a grotesque bouquet of singles and EPs.

Årabrot is about to represent for this generation what the sum of Melvins, Birthday Party and Swans was to the generation before them; a source of pleasure from both auditory and moral excesses. The band’s foundation is noise-rock, but has strong elements of industrial music and noise. In Årabrot there is also a dramatic component few other bands in history possess: histories are told and emotions are laid out in a way that’s closer to the compositional techniques of experimental film and theatre than traditional song structure. Last but not least they are drawn to the lyrics that combine elements of two of the most stimulating works of human kind: The Bible and Pornography.

The brainchild of Philadelphia’s Matt Garfield, Mose Giganticus pulls from an extensive range of hard rock, metal, and punk influences to create a unique and modern record with their Relapse debut ‘Gift Horse’

‘The Left Path,’ ‘Last Resort,’ ‘White Horse’ and ‘Days of Yore’ brings together driving, power riffs and low-end heaviness with expansive electronics, synth elements, and spirited attitude. ‘Gift Horse’ is as infectious as it is timeless, and a massive debut from an oncoming force-to-be reckoned with.

14.5. SLEEP / A STORM OF LIGHT

Formed as a Bay Area punk rock band called Asbestosdeath, the band changed their musical direction and name and debuted as Sleep with their “Volume One” album in 1991. After Justin Marler left the band, the core lineup of Al Cisneros, Matt Pike and Chris Hakius went into the studio to record a demo cassette that they sent to Earache Records. The recording was released in November 1992 (exactly as received by the label) under the name “Sleep’s Holy Mountain” and went on to forever alter the musical landscape. Countless current bands cite “…Holy Mountain” as a major inspiration, and the unique sound and style of the record can be heard in many subsequent releases by bands from all over the world.

“Sleep’s Holy Mountain” created such a buzz that major label London Records signed the band. Unfortunately, the label lacked the vision necessary to actually follow through and release the album that Sleep recorded, mostly because it took the not-radio-friendly form of a Single song — a 63 minute long ode to weed — called “Dopesmoker.” Sleep returned to the studio and edited the track down to 52 minutes and retitled it “Jerusalem”, but it was again rejected. London Records shelved the record and dropped the band, leading to their dissolution.

Luckily, the record had a life after death and refused to stay buried. It first saw the light of day as the shortened “Jerusalem” version  by The Music Cartel in 1998 before “Dopesmoker” (at its full 63 minute length) was given a proper release by Tee Pee Records in 2003. “Dopesmoker” stands as one of the towering achievements in recent metal history, a mesmerizing, intoxicating, and incredibly complex song that is still unrivaled in the annals of stoner metal.

The band’s breakup, while devastating for fans, turned out to have a silver lining as Matt Pike went on to form High On Fire, a metal juggernaut that has authored five albums to date, and Al Cisneros went on to form OM who have released four albums to date.

SLEEP features Al Cisneros (bass / vocals), Matt Pike (guitar) and Jason Roeder (drums).

Formed by multi-faced artist/musician Josh Graham (Neurosis, ex-Red Sparowes/Battle Of Mice), A Storm Of Light have become a whole new musical entity on its own merits, taking singer/guitarist Graham’s experiences from his previous musical repertoire and finding its own unique voice through the vessel known as A Storm Of Light.

21.5. DUB TRIO / DEAN ALLEN FOYD

Dub Trio is back with their fourth and most powerful album to date – IV – an overwhelming blend of sounds, styles and ideas that come out swinging, and hit harder than ever. Can metal coexist with dub’s bass heavy riddims? Dub Trio’s newest album proves that not only can such incongruities coexist, but that in the right hands they flourish! With IV the band succeeds dramatically at emphasizing the theories, emotions, sounds, and concepts of their current musical exploration. IV finds the members playing multiple instruments, tweaking, turning & torturing knobs, cutting and chopping the audio itself, and shaping the compositions to create their own unique interpretation of “dub” as an art form.

Dub Trio has worked closely with Lady Gaga as her original show-casing band, as well as with 50 Cent and G-Unit, Mary J. Blige, Tupac Shakur, Yoko Ono, The Fugees, Lauryn Hill, Tom Morello (of Rage Against The Machine), Mos Def, Mobb Deep, and many more.
The weight of Dub Trio’s power comes from their incredible musicianship, their versatility as performers and the intense scope of their creativity as Producers. Their own records are a mind-ripping sonic collage of impossibly different musical structures all working together to build something much more staggering than the sum of its parts

“Dub Trio is celebrating dub in their own way and in the process attempting to redefine the genre by reinterpreting how raw human emotions like sadness, rage, and joy can be fodder for musical expression…” – PopMatters

“Anyone who calls themselves a musician needs to take in a Dub Trio show EXCEPT if you are a drummer.  After seeing  what Joe Tomino does with a drum kit, a pair of sticks &  an affected mic, you WILL give up playing drums.” – Sentimentalist

Dean Allen Foyd is a Stockholm based psychedelic band with a
wide range of music styles. Everything from garage, delta blues,
folk and space-rock can be heard in their music. Syd Barrett’s
Pink Floyd, Arthur Lee’s Love and Captain Beefheart can be easily
picked as some of their influences but at the same time the
band takes a step forward into making their sound modern and
updated with the present times.

The Sounds Can Be So Cruel is an album presenting nine ingeniously composed songs with elements of, aside from the obvious ones, theremin, strings, slide
and flute for instance. The music is packaged neatly and matching
along with an equally attractive as bold cover.
The Sounds Can Be So Cruel is an album that will take Dean Allen Foyd
far away from being labeled as an underground band
and will establish them as a genuinely great rock band, plain and
simple.

9.4. ANCESTORS / FARFLUNG / BLACK RAINBOWS

Formed in 2006, Los Angeles’ Ancestors create mighty, modern music that dovetails innovative arrangement, crushing primordial riff interplay and melodic instrumental passages with textural atmospherics. With both thunderous roar and expansive communiqué, Ancestors are proving to be a quickly-emerging force of musical power and creativity.

In evolutionary theory, species that share an ancestor are said to be of common descent.  There’s nothing common about the music of Los Angeles quintet Ancestors.  To peg or try to pigeon hole the art they create would be missing the point.

http://ancestorsmusic.com

‘If there were ever proof that stoner rock has become its own genre, it would be the fact that an album would have song titles like “Endless Drifting Wreck” and “Silver Shrooms” — given the band, it would actually be more surprising if it didn’t have song titles like that. Farflung have been at it often and long enough that by this point their jacked-up space boogie — still audibly in debt to the patron saints of the whole shebang, Hawkwind, but no less enjoyable for that reason — gives exactly what anyone who favors the approach would want: great album graphics perfect for black T-shirts, more echo slathered over the vocals than imaginable, and a feeling that everything and everyone involved in the creation of it are all collectively careening down a cosmic highway at light speed while screaming “YEEEAARRRRRGHHHH” out of the windows.’

http://farflungmusic.blogspot.com/

Formed in 2005 Black Rainbows are an heavy psych, stoner, rock n’roll power trio.
Founded by Gabriele Fiori (guitar & vocals) after few months Daniele Conti (drums) and Marco De Masi (bass) joined the band.
During this years they evolve their sound, their live shows, their discography. Their sound is a mix of 70’s like MC5, Blue Cheer, Hawkwind, Black Sabbath and hard psych-stoner from 90’s as Kyuss, Monster Magnet, Fu-manchu, Qotsa e Nebula.
Shared the stage with band as: Airbourne, Nebula, Karma to Burn, Entrance Band, Fatso Jetson, Witchcraft, Dead Meadow, Black Mountain, Los Natas and White Hills.
