7.7. BORIS / RUSSIAN CIRCLES / SAADE

Boris / Russian Circles Co-Headline Tour

Borishas earned its rabid cult following for their ability to expertly harness music as power. Be it psychedelic metal, colossal drone, blistering punk or distortion-ravaged shoegaze, a Boris song is an exploration of sound as physical mass. The Japanese trio’s classic 2002 album, Heavy Rocks is a landmark of their mastery. So, it’s fitting that the group’s new album sharing the same title and very similar artwork to that disc, this year’s Heavy Rocks seeks to redefine “heavy” music in a culmination of the band’s tireless efforts over the past two decades. Heavy Rocks (2011) is beyond heavy, it firmly establishes Boris as the pillar of innovation and integrity in guitar-based music.

Boris formed in the early 90s as a four piece just-for-fun endeavor with the sonic template of influences like
Melvins and Earth. By the time of its 1996 debut as a trio Absolutego (later released in the US via Southern Lord in 2000), Boris had already hit its stride in creating unique ground-rattling heavy, melodic music. The group, bassist/vocalist Takeshi, guitarist/vocalist Wata and drummer/vocalist Atsuo went on to release nearly 20 studio albums.

Heavy Rocks“ will be released on May 24th via Sargent House.

There are instrumental rock bands, and then there is Russian Circles. This Chicago-based trio has raised the bar incredibly high with the release of their first full-length Enter. The band charges out of the gate on this debut with a potent forcefulness that leaves many of their more seasoned, contemplative, and mathy peers sounding a bit hesitant and flaccid in comparison.

Russian Cirles are hard at work with their fourth album. Brandon Curtis of The Secret Machines & Interpol who produced the band’s previous album Geneva is producing & mixing the new collection of songs at Phantom Manor in Chicago.

This marks the band’s first full-length to be released worldwide exclusively via Sargent House – the band’s longtime management company and record label that had previously released only the vinyl editions of its three previous albums.

Saade from Croatia know a thing or two about unleashing riffs that will stick with you. Besides that they display a sensibility for grunge, black metal and sweet pop-hooks. They have two releases approaching for 2011: the first release is a METAL split 7″ with BORIS that will be out on KYEO sometime in February 2011.  a cassette tape version of this split will be made available on ROTTING CHAPEL PROPAGANDA too!

9.12. 5 YEARS OF SOLRIZE / LOS DEEPEST / DEATH TRAIN ROCKERS

In December 2006 Solrize made their way from the depth of an Austrian tattoo studio. They manage to balance chunky riffs, low tuned heavy bass sound and psychedelic jams with 70-ies flair and modern styles into pure awsome-ness.
Solrize shared the stage with acts like Garcia Plays Kyuss, Europe an ZZ  Top.

In August 2011 the gang will head over to the desert of California to record their 2nd full length album with Scott Reeder (Kyuss, Unida, The Obsessed).
A late 2011 release is expected.

12.5. CRIPPLED BLACK PHOENIX / NITRO MAHALIA

Born from a blizzard of horned cats, Crippled Black Phoenix bring you a twisted cinematic experience, handcrafted by a mercenary crew of musical outsiders, giving depth and gravity to regal songs about love, loss, tragedy and redemption.
Using a blend of modern amplified and Victorian era equipment, the band have produced a captivating, slow-burning sound that’s both archaic and modern at the same time.

Nitro Mahalia
can be located somewhere between handmade post punk and out there, ultra-tight space noise in the vein of Trans Am. They recently released their self-titled debut album on Interstellar Records.

1.5. EARTH / SABBATH ASSEMBLY

Drone-Inventors Earth are pioneers of a distinctive sound that continues to bloom; with each new studio album, they evolve. Openness to and experimentation with sound and instrumentation ensure Earth’s ability to remain consistently interesting and undoubtedly unique.

Heavy, lush and melodic, their latest effort Angels Of Darkness, Demons of Light: I, draws inspiration from folk-rock bands like the Pentangle and Fairport Convention, and the North African Tuareg band Tinariwen.
The instruments weave in urgent dialog; the guitar snarls, whispers and roars, the drums loom like a mountain range, the cello howls and the bass answers back. They reveal both epic fullness andhighly crafted counterpoint. In Carlson’s words: “To me we’re less Wagnerian and more Debussy-like now.”

The Process Church was an intensely creative, apocalyptic shadow side to the flower-powered ’60s and New Age ’70s. The influential group opened Chapters in London, Europe and across the United States. Dressing in black cloaks and walking the streets with German Shepherds, they created their own intricately designed magazines, and promoted a controversial, quasi-Gnostic theology that reconciled Christ and Satan through deeper awareness and love.

Sabbath Assembly is dedicated to the quest set forth by the Church to conquer fear with love, rePROCESSing their hymns for the current generation.
Re-charging the original hymns of The Process Church and working them into moving renditions that unite the trinity of rock, psychedelic and gospel into one triumphant re-awakening.

Sabbath Assembly is the brainchild of No-Neck Blues Band/Boadrum lifer Dave Nuss and Jex Thoth, a singer with a real voice and bandleader of an occult rock band also carrying her name.

24.4. WEEDEATER / ZOROASTER

After 2007’s now classic release, “God Luck and Good Speed” had been toured to death around the world, Weedeater finally took some time between the mishaps and mayhem of 2010 to write and record their 2nd album for Southern Lord Recordings and 4th full-length CD/LP, “Jason…The Dragon”. Recorded and mixed once again by the legendary Steve Albini at Electrical Audio Studios in Chicago.

This masterpiece takes the listening doomernaut on a slithering journey though a sludgy world of viscous, black molasses riffs that are punctuated by cannon drums and and the occasional narcotic banjo jam.

there is only ONE Weedeater:

Zoroaster‘s live show has been described as “an obliteration of the senses”, earning it the distinction of “Atlanta’s loudest band”. “Holy mind-altering DOOM!!! Permanent Brain Damage was originally recorded in 1991 as an album-length demo tape, and is considered to be among the great rare “grails” of sludge-doom a la Saint Vitus. The influences of Sabbath et. al. are all over this disc, but no band I’ve heard sounds quite like the Blood Farmers. The songwriting is very creative and bizarre, never straying into any standard formula. Very dark, brilliant work from guitarist Dave Depraved…VERY intense, angry and wild in the tradition of Dave Chandler or Greg Ginn. I highly recommend Permanent Brain Damage to all fans of Vitus, Sleep, Church of Misery and of course, the Blood Farmers’ favorite subject: weird ’70s horror movies.”

This unwavering dedication has influenced scores of renowned musicians some three decades on, and the legacy grows stronger every year.

On April 12th the new album “Last Rites” will be released. Something that fans have been clamoring for since the last Liebling / Griffin masterpiece was released in 1994 (“Be Forewarned”).

Gothenburg´s Graveyard resurrects the sounds of 70’s psychedelic rock. The clash of folk, psychedelic, and blues makes for a mind-bending trip back to the days of Cream, Sabbath, and Blue Cheer. The band proves they have what it takes to hang with the classics while delivering a sound that is all their own.

Their brand new Album “Hisingen Blues” is a totally analogue recorded and mixed production that skillfully combines a 70’s vibe with a more powerful modern sound.
The world can expect nothing less than a true masterpiece of rock music.

In Solitude, hailing from the metal hotbed Uppsala, Sweden defy all genres and limitations. Time stopped for them, when heavy-  and black-metal were considered one and the same.

Purchased tickets can be returned at the vendors.

Here is the Official statement:

Hello all,

First off, we’d like to thank you all for your support over the last year. It was a warm welcome back to the arena and everyone in the Buzzov-en camp appreciated every minute of it. Now, on to the bad news. Unfortunately, Kirk is having some health issues that need to be resolved before he is able to tour again. Hence, it is with heavy hearts that we must announce the postponement of Buzzov-en’s European tour in April and our appearance at Roadburn. We will have rescheduled dates booked and posted ASAP, and the fine folks at Roadburn have already been gracious enough to invite us to play next year’s event. Once Kirk has completed his treatments over the next several weeks, all should be well and he is expected to make a quick recovery, so the Maryland Deathfest and Hellfest appearances are both still on. soon. We’ll have another update for you shortly. Thanks for your understanding and continued support.

7.4. DOUBLE FEATURE VOL 1 : PLACE OF SKULLS / ACID KING / THE GATES OF SLUMBER / CARLTON MELTON

Day 2 of this Roadtrip Double Feature features some of the most renowned names in doom / heavy music today.

Formed in early 2000 by guitarist/singer/songwriter Victor Griffin, bassist Lee Abney, & drummer Tim Tomaselli… Place of Skulls (a biblical reference to Golgotha) carries the torch of prior Griffin & Abney bands such as Death Row and Pentagram in the ever-burgeoning underground scene of doom metal. But as their sound continues to expand beyond those boundaries…they incorporate intricate dynamics in their songs that few bands of the same genre explore.
Their sound is as crushing live as any and no less threatening in volume.

Victor Griffin is a true guitar hero if there ever was one. His riffs and songwriting for Death Row and Pentagram have paved the way for legions of bands. Place Of Skulls has been his top priority for over 10 years now.
www.placeofskulls.com

Dark, slow, slithering, strangely hypnotic, Acid King merges the fuzz of stoner-rock with the mood of doom, and demolishes any qualms about the apocalypse with the throaty, condemning vocals of Lori S. Joseph.

The Gates Of Slumber encapsulate the metal experience for true believers.  The Indianapolis doom metal trio formed in the late 1990’s with the goal of creating a band whose sound delivered an updated take on the member’s long list of favourite Heavy Metal greats.  Weaned on Black Sabbath, St. Vitus, the melodic might of Iron Maiden and a host of classic bands from Thin Lizzy and Rainbow to Mercyful Fate, The Gates Of Slumber draw deep from Heavy Metal’s most powerful blood and deliver Doom in its purest form.

Their brand new album “The Wretch” was recorded at England’s Orgone Studios with producer Jaime Gomez Arellano (Ghost, Angel Witch). A spring release via cult label Rise Above Records is expected.

It is understood that Carlton Melton´s  music is not for everyone. If you prefer top-notch, modern day production and crafty songwriting you may want to stop here. If you prefer old SST label cassette tapes or an early Spaceman 3 cassette you recently found wedged in the back seat of your car you may dig some of this… or perhaps you like to listen and gaze at an old David Crosby LP now and then. We dug it enough to strike up our own label Mid-To-Late Records so we could share our favorite jams on vinyl.
