21.10. OJM / PARASOL CARAVAN

OJM
were formed in Treviso, Italy in 1997. Since the very beginning both the Italian music press and rock ’n’ roll scene in general seemed to show a certain interest toward the band due to their personal style displaying rough guitars with a psychedelic touch and hints of Blue Cheer, Black Sabbath, MC5 and Grand Funk.

As far as their live career goes, OJM can boast hundreds of gigs and two UK tours, intense and wild performances supporting several legendary bands such as DKT/MC5, IGGY AND THE STOOGES, Motorpsycho and Brant Bjork.
Their 5th Lp „Volcano“ was produced by Dave Catching (Eagles Of Death Metal, QOTSA) and released through Go Down Records.

Austria’s Parasol Caravan play Heavy Rock with Stoner and Psychedelic elements, fat 70’s influenced guitar riffs, whiskey soaked vocals and a nice modern touch.

4.10. WHITE HILLS / DEAD MAN

Musically, H-p1, White Hills second full-length for Thrill Jockey, expands on the explorations of previous albums in ambience, noise, and space rock all led by guitarist Dave W.’s blistering guitar solos. This is the most fully realized White Hills album to date and the one that takes them furthest from their pure space rock roots. It is also their most angry record. It is a reaction to what White Hills sees as government co-opted and controlled by corporations. It is a wake up call:

We can barely pay our rent each month but we are willing to pull out our credit cards and go into debt each time a new iPhone promises a better connection. The joke is on us. Our greater connectivity has caused us to disconnect from our humanity. We have been sold the religion of consumerism to feed the corporate machine. We have been tricked into believing that wanting our tax dollars to pay for our own health care is treacherous to the ideals of a democratic society. H-p1 is symbolic of the simplification of complex ideas to keep the masses from questioning the system. – Ego Sensation

The cover is a stark, colorless landscape, a metaphor for the status quo, while the inside and the record are an attempt to break free from this bland existence. The music and the photo inside are loud, colorful, exuberant, and alive.

H-p1 was recorded at the Ocropolis in Williamsburg, Brooklyn on September 7th & 8th 2010 by Shahin “Showtime” Motia (guitarist of Oneida) and mixed by Dave W. & Pierre Auntour in NYC and by Antronhy in Nottingham, UK. The album was mastered by Heba Kadry at the Lodge. A notable difference is the addition of synthesizer player, Shazzula, for the recordings. Shazzula has performed with the group in Europe on and off throughout the last year. There was no compression used on the record. Instead distortion boxes were used to enhance the natural dynamics of the songs. “The recordings captured a natural ebb and flow of the instruments within each song. For this reason I did not ride the faders while mixing the record to bring out certain instruments over others. It is the way it happened when it was recorded.” said Dave W.

H-p1 is the cry for the disenfranchised, the exposure of the ills that the corporate-controlled governmental system has put in place. This seventeen minute song is the summation of the album, the point when the protagonist delivers his realization and vision of a solution to the masses. There is another way. You don’t have to be a drone.

It all started as an experiment in 2003. Four musicians from Örebro, Sweden decided to pool their talents and it didn’t take long before a new band was formed. Soon after, the moniker Dead Man was chosen and the band sprung to life. With each member possessing a wealth of musical experience derived from time spent in various Swedish acts (including the hard rock band NORRSKEN, which featured in its ranks current WITCHCRAFT front man Magnus Pelander, GRAVEYARD members Joakim Nilsson and bassist Rikard Edlund and DEAD MAN’s Kristoffer Sjödahl), the band put their psychedelic, folk and hard rock influences into a pot and began to stir. Within a few weeks of forming, the quartet’s intense songwriting chemistry generated a solid set of hard-hitting, memorable songs.
A 7-inch and two full length records later they earned ecstatic reviews and a reputation as an undeniable live act.

10.10. THE MELVINS

For those who don’t know:
The Melvins have been a band for over 25 years…

The Melvins have done a shit load of albums…. How many is a shit load? No one really knows.

The Melvins have four members.
King Buzzo… Longest surviving and only original member left. When they get around to replacing him there will be no original members!

Dale Crover... Long standing drummer and part time guitar player. Dale likes his booze in a High Ball glass.

Jared Warren… Bass player, singer and part time drama geek. Jared also plays in the band Big Business.

Coady Willis… Drummer. Coady has a funny story about trying to play a gig in leather pants. Ask him, it’s funny as shit! Coady also plays drums in Big Business.

So there you have it!
You can find other interesting bits and bobs about the Melvins on line and some of it is even true! Well, it’s at least as true as what the band would tell you in person.

20.10. TRUE WIDOW / SQUADRA OMEGA

Over the past two decades, we’ve been bombarded with grunge, with shoegaze, with sludge, with doom metal, with post-rock, with slow-core, with all these examples of loud rock music that reach towards one extreme or another, the sole intent of which seems to be to bludgeon the listener into accepting what they conceive to be a “total sound,” one which makes their effort more valid than the others around it, and by association, worthy of your reverence.

Dallas, TX trio True Widow plays against type. Listen closely to their new double album As High As the Highest Heavens and From the Center to the Circumference of the Earth and you’ll notice something rare: a band that plays to the notions of the genres mentioned above, one which embodies the best characteristics of each but never repeats something that’s been done. The understanding of space, balance, and method exhibited by True Widow is different enough to avoid the trappings of genres done to death; special enough to revere, and to pull away from memories of sounds that once wore you down.

Squadra Omega
is an Italian psychedelic free-form jam band that knows how to bend your ears. It is The Grateful Dead, Sun Ra and Coltrane all rolled together in one night of all joy and dread abandoned. This is some of the best free improvisation you will find in avant jazz and rock. There’s a lot of 70s jam rock influence but they interact and mix their influences together totally 21st century. – Last.fm

14.9. LECHEROUS GAZE / DANAVA

From the smoldering ashes of punk rock powerhouse Annihilation Time, which festered for a year and a half in a downtown Oakland flop house noted for once housing bands like High on Fire and Drunk Horse, rises the Lecherous Gaze. Steeping themselves in the Hendrix-tripped guitar-god worship of bombastic 70’s rock and the primordial 60’s rockin’ rawness of Chuck Berry, Graham Clise and company’s hard-core of Flag and Sabbath worship has congealed into a sticky sweet nug of potent hard rock hash.

New front man Lakis Panagiotopulos’s soulful timbres, inspiring comparisons to the legendary larynges of Joey Ramone and Glenn Danzig, layer over the punishing grooves of Chris Grande and Noel Sullivan, as mad axe man Clise shreds his Marshalls to their breaking points. Spending 2010 in a pupal stage of cooking up their jams into a frenzy-inducing stew of awesomeness, Lecherous Gaze have transmuted into the perfect beast to carry rock and roll into the 2012 Armageddon.

www.lecherousgaze.com

Although Danava play the type of ferociously intense, foundation-rattling, rock and roll that might righteously justify some good old fashioned head-banging, vocalist Dusty Sparkles wants you to know that he doesn’t consider his band a metal outfit.
Nor are they prog-rock, or part of whatever ridiculous, wonky sounding “movement” someone just came up with to try to lump a bunch of disparate bands together.

Sparkles has as much use for genre tags as folks on the Titanic did for bottled water. He’s not interested in being part of a scene, and he’s entirely unconcerned about anyone’s reaction to or opinion of his band. “We’re not trying to fit in anywhere specifically,” he drawls nonchalantly. “we aren’t going to do this unless we feel happy about it.”

Iron Heel is a new band from Vienna, Austria and they are doing their own thing. Namely creating the perfect soundtrack for a hike in the swamps. Low frequencies, sludgy filthiness, stoner hooks, it´s all there and hell yes, they pull off the clean vocals like very few bands do!
A track of their debut ep „Black Shovel“ is up on their bandcamp site.
