27.9. YOB / DARK CASTLE / KONGH

The journey began back in 1996 when vocalist/guitarist/songwriter Mike Scheidt began composing classic doom metal riffs in the vein of his heroes Sleep, Cathedral, and Black Sabbath. By the turn of the millennium, the band had recorded debut album Elaborations of Carbon, and was rapidly growing from a NW secret, to a highly sought after support act for tour stops by luminaries like High on Fire and Isis.

Yob proved to audiences night after night that it had chops and sonic glory to deliver that exceeded the promise of its albums. Brian Slagel of Metal Blade records took note, and the man who discovered Metallica, Slayer, and Voivod took YOB under his wing. Two fantastic albums were released, 2004’s The Illusion of Motion, and 2005 masterpiece The Unreal Never Lived. By this time, YOB had shed the sound of its early influences, and was in turn creating a new and original doom sound that would in turn inspire others from around the world.

Then YOB went into reclusion as the line-up shifted, and Mike Scheidt took several years to regroup and try his hand at other projects. In 2009, YOB awakened from its slumber, adding bassist Aaron Rieseberg and releasing the surprising and long-awaited The Great Cessation, the reformed band’s debut for Profound Lore Records.

The male / female Florida duo Dark Castle formed in the mid-’00s, first attracting the attention of the doom / sludge metal underground with their 2008 debut album Spirited Migration (At a Loss Recordings). While among the heaviest groups in America, Dark Castle doesn’t achieve this distinction with the elongated, time-stretching tracks of other doom bands—theirs are shorter, denser, more punishing and vitriolic songs that take in a wide variety of influences, from noise, drone, prog and even traditional Eastern music.

Their live shows amaze crowds shocked by how two individuals alone could conjure such colossal, earth-rumbling heaviness. With Surrender to All Life Beyond Form, Dark Castle at last properly captures their live energy on record. The album was produced and recorded by Sanford Parker in Steve Albini’s Electrical Audio studio, and will be recognized not only the band’s most crushing work yet, but as their most experimental and progressive as well.

With soaring leads and thick, depressive bouts of gloom and despair, Kongh plays a particularly misanthropic brand of stoner doom.
Kongh simply know how to make metal sound.

Sometimes they get bluesy just because they can, the have taken one or two stoner-groovy clues from Electric Wizard, occasionally immerse in black metal, while the band never gets so flashy as to sound pretentious, observative listeners can tell these swedes know what they’re doing.

9.11. MY SLEEPING KARMA / SAMSARA BLUES EXPERIMENT / THE MACHINE / LONELY KAMEL

Sometimes one creates a dynamic impression by saying something, and sometimes one creates a significant impression by remaining silent.
My Sleeping Karma combines the organic aspect of psychedelic groove rock with emotional shades of aphasian landscapes. That was the inTention of the debut album and it still remains. Guitar, bass and drums in love with a soundboard.

Samsara Blues Experiment are a Berlin based band, founded in Summer 2007 by lead-guitarist/singer Christian Peters.
As the band name implies three elemental aspects are to notice – the blues as the fundament where it all comes from, the inclusion of spiritual influences accompanied by Indian/raga music and the experimental approach to mix up varied elements in a convincing manner.
The band’s songs are dominated by a playful dual guitar work as well as a passionate blend of heavy psych, stoner and space rock. This is provided with several nuances and transitions in between – quite retro styled, jamming, even sometimes worked out with a repetitive hypnotic touch in the tradition of krautrock.

World In Sound released the long awaited debut ‘Long Distance Trip’ in March 2010 which finally offers the band’s potential.

The Machine is a three-piece psychedelic stoner rock band, together since somewhere 2007. In the last four years, they released three full length albums. Their latest effort, Drie (2010), was released at the German recordlabel Elektrohasch Records.
Besides playing numerous clubshows, The Machine also appeared on the bill at a couple of important festivals, one of them being Roadburn (2010 & 2011).

“The Machine, hailing from Rotterdam, Holland, pair molten stoner rock riffs with a fair dose of retro psych for good measure. The band also excels at incorporating acid-blues jamming that lifts their whole performance into outer space. The band’s latest album, Drie (out on Elektrohasch) captures the band in great form.”

20.7. JEX THOTH

Epic and haunting 70’s tinged Doom the Jex Thoth way, meaning you have never heard anything like this before. Hammond organ, down tuned guitars and punishing drums mingle with Jex Thoth’s clear, divine vocals to devastating effect!

Jex Thoth are openly nostalgic without being sentimental or trite. The band’s biggest strengths are the haunting vocals of Jex and avoiding the usual trap of carbon copying its predecessors.

Alchemical Doom is imminent !

Attention: this is an early show. Doors will open at 19.00, show starts at 20.00 sharp.

27.10. BLOOD CEREMONY / IRON HEEL / BAD LUCK RIDES ON WHEELS / CROWSKIN

Blood Ceremony’s distinct style of flute-tinged witch rock evolves from an infernal marriage of occult inspired acid folk and vintage hard rock riffing.  After a mind-numbing study of hundreds of witchcraft themed films, the group began to pour their energies into crafting songs, tansforming their fascination for horror into a profane musical vision.

A celebration of Euro-horror, ’60s saturnalia and occult miscellanea, their self-titled debut album was mixed by Billy Anderson and released by Rise Above Records in 2008. Following this they completed a successful European tour alongside Brit doom legends Electric Wizard.

Blood Ceremony have recently finished recording their second album ‘Living With The Ancients’, working alongside producer Sanford Parker in Chicago. The album displays a definite improvement in songwriting skills and a strong musical maturity. Wider influences from obscure areas can be heard fluctuating beyond the more obvious comparisons associated their aforementioned 2008 debut.

21.6. YAWNING MAN / THE ENTRANCE BAND

Yawning Man was founded in 1986 in the Californian Desert. Up until 2005 they never released an album. The band has shared members / is asscociated with big names as Queens Of The Stoneage, Kyuss, Brant Bjork and the Bros and Fatso Jetson and is regarded as one of the prime original Desert / Stoner Rock Bands. Their profile remained deeply underground, under the radar and almost non-existent.

The Entrance Band is a psychedelic trio from LA that is riding a wave equally composed of fuzz and buzz.

THURSTON MOORE
“The Entrance Band’s new music is the most alluring and, yes, entrancing vibe I’ve yet to experience in this new age. A soundtrack for the new groove”

LA TIMES
“Their music creates the feeling that something fresh and powerful is afoot. A potent mix of political mindedness — including a few conspiracy theories — and musical virtuosity, their songs throb and wail and strive to open minds.”

WASHINGTON POST
“The Entrance Band plays apocalyptic psych-rock that is so good it will make you welcome the end days with open arms, as the guitars menacingly swirl in the background and the drums echo the sound of the four horsemen.”

19.7. NEUROSIS / AMENRA / UFOMAMMUT

Descriptors fail in the same way that describing ths shock of the sudden or new or subtle grace of magnitude fails. Each and every time. Because words are idea shorthand for experience and experience can only be transmitted, if you´re lucky or unlucky enough to miss it the first time, through comparative measures and means: a nightmare is an unhappy dream, death is like when life stops and the earth calls, and violent change is when everything is no longer the same but hurts because of it.

But here’s a shorthand: Neurosis is music. Music in the same way that Wagner is music. Or that it all comes dow. Or the graying granite planet we call home is both the cradle and the coffin of all desire and hopes and expression forces its way through us and into wires and out of speakers framing a journey from here to there and not back again. Ever. This is a one-way trip.

So keep the descriptors – the “crushes”, the “destroys”, “dark” and even “deep”. These are both all at once and again not enough, and not even too much. They´re products of lazy inquiry.

Keep them and let the real shoulder its way to the front. Like it did when the San Francisco Bay Area, forget that… when Oakland gave birth to this ride and the ticket for it in 1985 as Neurosis. Under the stewardship of Scott Kelly, Dave Edwardson, Jason Roeder and in 1989 spiritual heir Steve Von Till (and now Noah Landis and Josh Graham on visuals), Neurosis does what only the best art can: it crafts a sense world for those with sense and senses from the realm of eternal ideas and weaves it, whole cloth, into the audio, the visual, the powerful. A seamless melding and welding of elements that are not too wildly disparate: loss, gain, and eventually gaining through loss.
(Eugene S. Robinson / Oxbow)

Decaying cathedrals. The march at twilight towards a sure death. Infested soil. Millions of decrepit bones in an eternal sleep. Surrounded by shrapnel, rusty bullets and locust. Cries still echo in the barren fields, remaining unheard by today’s deaf society. It’s on this soil that the first big war came to an end, it’s from this soil that a band arose that embraces this past, this pain, this blasphemy.

Formed in these forsaken fields of West-Flanders, Amenra has been conjuring unholy sermons since 1999. Spreading their vision of a world that’s out of touch with its past, present and future, they take their adepts through ungodly rituals into a world of unseen mystique.

Ufomammut is a power trio formed in 1999 in Italy by Poia, Urlo and Vita.
Ufomammut is worldwide recognized as the creator of a unique brand of psychedelic sludge.
With long songs, droning vocals and massive effects the band combines a monumental riffing attitude with the psychedelia of the more visionary Pink Floyd.

In 2010 the band created EVE, the fifth album.
EVE – comprised of one 45-minute atmospheric track, divided into five distinct movements – acts as a living homage to the first woman on Earth, and the rebellion to her creator for bringing knowledge to Mankind.

Ufomammut’s live show is supported by the internationally acclaimed video and graphic art of Malleus, a rock artists’ collective who conjure the entirety of Ufomammut’s visual impact.

3.7. EYEHATEGOD / CHURCH OF MISERY / TORN FROM EARTH

Godfathers of Sludge and Ultra Heavy Riff Monster from New Orleans EyeHateGod will melt faces once again !
While not being in a hurry to release a new album in the near future they recently unleashed an unholy live dvd on to the public.
This highly recommended visual assault also features expansive footage from their show at the Arena last year.

http://eyehategod.ee/

From the Land Of The Rising Sun come these not so jolly murder-obsessed Sabbath freaks, Church Of Misery. Born back in 1995 out of a love of early 70s Hard Rock and traditional Doom Metal, Church Of Misery set about assaulting ears and minds the world over with their notorious dedications to some of the sickest known serial killers in modern history; Denis Nilsen, Jeffrey Dahmer and Richard Ramirez to name but a few.

This combination of disturbing lyrical imagery infused with their frantic brand of Wah Wah driven Acid Metal conjures up images of a latter-day Manson Family sitting around in blood-spattered tie-dye contemplating their next sinister move. Whereas other left field Japanese rock bands such as Boris, Melt Banana, Galhammer, Boredoms and have managed to achieve a reasonable amount of media coverage and live status on European shores over the past couple of decades, the activities Church Of Misery seem to have remained encased in a morgue of confusion and mystery.

26.10. ROTOR / SEVEN THAT SPELLS / NEUME

Rotor from Berlin are regular touring mates of Germany´s Stoner-Heavyweights Colour Haze. They are an instrumental band who manage to create something special with stoner- and post-metal-influences.

Be prepared for an astonishing piece of music! (stonerrock.com) This trio from Berlin makes an infernal intensive noise between old Kyuss, older eccentric US-indie-rock and very, very old psychedelic rumble. (rockhard) Attention! Neo-Hippies are at work. (metal hammer) Starless era King Crimson meets Monster Magnet, this is a ferocious slice of distorted riffing and turbo charged wah-pedal action, which stampedes through you like a herd of buffalo chasing the sun. A space-rock masterpiece for the grunge generation. (terrascope)

Seven That Spells was formed by Niko Potocnjak in 2003. The
beginnings of the band were rooted in the power trio format but havesince then and after more than 50 musicians passing through the band evolved to a more modern and aggressive psychedelic sound incorporating polymetrics and occasional viking funeral rites. The band gained an underground following and has enjoyed some great events in the past – a tour of Japan in 2008, a gig at the Roadburn Festival in 2009 and at the Duna Jam in 2010.

20.6. THOU / MOLOCH

Thou are a “punk rock” doom band. They’ve somehow combined the ethics of true DIY punk and the sound of sludging, droning doom to breathe life into a creative entity that is completely passionate and dedicated to what they do. They don’t write their music and lyrics to serve any one scene or genre. Their discography is as thick as the holy bible! If there was ever a band that is effectively burning their own path in the heavy music world, its this one.
