White Hills newest and most energized recording to date is bursting with raw energy packed into their most concise songs to date. Fear not long time White Hills fans, there is still loads of killer guitar work and fuzzed out psychedelia on Frying on this Rock. Their highly sought after and deluxe vinyl editions as well as the super limited CDR and 7″ releases have made them a band who get talked about as much in reviews as they do on social networks. Their boundless live performances, especially the higher profile ones at ATP New York, Supersonic and several Roadburn Festivals, or their dates with the Flaming Lips and Sleep have established White Hills as one of the most talked about space rock bands currently performing. Their 2011 H-p1 album topped several UK end of the year lists including one of the world’s most influential record stores, Rough Trade.
White Hills is guitarist Dave W. and bassist Ego Sensation. They are joined on this recording by frequent sonic collaborator Antronhy (drummer for Julian Cope) on treatments, synths, and backup vocals, and touring/recording drummer Nick Name.
“Frying on this Rock” was recorded in the fall of 2011, when White Hills dug in at BC Studios in Brooklyn with the help of recording engineer Martin Bisi (Brian Eno, Sonic Youth, Swans, Herbie Hancock, Boredoms). Unlike many previous recordings that focused on spontaneity, the band brought new songs to the studio that had been honed on recent European and American tours. Bisi brought his technical expertise to achieve the band’s desire for a more separated sonic recording.
The end result is an invigorating deep space rock album. An album that is at once able to channel the energy born of a collective anger into a swirling psychedelic, brutalising musical statement that mainlines the thrill of defiance straight to the listener’s heart.
Mamiffer is Faith Coloccia and ex Isis-Mastermind Aaron Turner.
Mamiffer travels between moments of minimalist tone worship, choral meditations, syncopated funeral marches, elaborate odd-time classical passages, and deconstructed doom metal. At its core, it’s a melancholic and occasionally vengeful exploration of texture and melody. It’s a sonic journey, a dynamic, living, breathing experience, a labor of love, and a bold new language.
Menace Ruine began in 2006, following several other collaborative projects between the Montreal-based duo of S. de la Moth and Geneviève.
Over the course of four albums and an EP they have forged a unique and idiosyncratic sound, constructed from vast, distorted,
yet always melodic textures and the imposing voice and songwriting of Geneviève.
A new Menace Ruine album is to be released Fall 2012 on vinyl by Sige Records and on CD on Profound Lore.
The album promises to be their most elaborate recording to date, combining the graceful melodicism of 2008’s ‘The Die is Cast’ with minimalist,
yet forceful arrangements, elaborate structures and powerful rhythms.
Graveyard was formed in Gothenburg 2007. Joakim and Rikard played together in a band called Norrsken nack in Örebro. It didn’t take long before things started to happen for Graveyard and before we knew it we were about to record and release our first album. (released on Transubstans in Europe and Tee Pee in North America). After the release of the first album we did what most ordinary rockband do to promote ourselves and our albums – extensive touring in crappy vans all across Europe and the US.
Now that we have got our second album Hisingen blues out (Nuclear Blast and Universal in Sweden) we are believe it or not excited to bring the new songs out to the public. By doing this we will hopefully get to see some of our favorite places again and also visit other countries and continents to which the first album didn’t take us – cos no matter how much fun it is to write and record albums it’s is in the live environment that we feel totally at home as a band.
The musical plan and an important piece of the puzzle
….. When we started the band we did so without a plan ever to come this far – but with that said we started Graveyard with the ambition and intention to take it as far as we could. Graveyard as a band wasn’t gonna be about mocking around in the rehearsal room, cos we knew what we wanted to do and that we also had the musical skills and the dedication to write and record great songs that could and would take us places.
But don’t think that we are happy with Hisingen and that’s it, in this department we are ready and can’t wait to get started on the next album. We just need to get a “little” bit of touring done before we get started – so as far as the bands “one year plan” goes there will be no rest for the wicked.
Burning up in fine style, Sweden’s Spiders mines a hard late “˜60s tough rock sound with a touch of proto-metal and a somewhat sinister motif to re-ignite the Scando garage scene once more.
Spiders was formed in Gothenburg in February 2010. A few months later the band appeared at one of Sweden’s most successful music festivals, Way Out West. It was around this time Spiders for the first time as a band stepped into the studio with producer Don Ahlsterberg (The Soundtrack of Our Lives, International Noise Conspiracy) and started recording. Since then they released Vinyl on Kemado Recordsand De:Nihil Records.
Their debut album “Flash Point” will be available October 5th through Crusher Records.
“We come from the land of ice and snow…” Based in Reykjavik Iceland Brain Police is fueled by a desire to play dirty, kick ass rock and roll; BP honed their skills and began assaulting the local touring circuit. The band has been touring since 1998 in Iceland and has released 4 studio albums,in 2005 they embarked on their first mini tour outside of Iceland.
In 2007 BP signed with Detroit`s finest Small Stone Records.
Radio hits in Icelandic national radio, songs that reached to number one: Jacuzzi Suzy, Rocket Fuel and Taste the Flower from “Brain Police” Coed Fever and Mr. Dolly from “Electric Fungus” Rooster Booster, The Baron and Thunderbird From “Beyond the Wasteland”.
A super group of the stoner rock scene, Greenleaf was formed sometime in late 1999/early 2000 by guitarist Tommi Holappa (Dozer), drummer Daniel Liden (Demon Cleaner and the drummer on Dozer’s Through the Eyes of Heathens and currently in And The Machine Said Behold!), and engineer/ bassist Bengt Bäcke. Featuring a revolving cast of fellow musicians who share a love of heavy fuzz rock, including Fredrik Nordin (Dozer), Daniel Jansson (Stonewall Noise Orchestra), and Peder Bergstrand (Lowrider), Greenleaf has consistently defined what rock ‘n’ roll was, is, and should be.
Psychedelic at times, or rocking garage style, like MC5… Slight hint of the doom/blues here and there. A good mix for sure.
The Graviators was formed deep in the woods of southern Sweden in 2009, with a vision to write and record music inspired by the sounds of the great rock ‘n’ roll groups of the 70’s. With a mix of heavy, yet melodic riffs, that will take you on a trip back in time, when bands like Black Sabbath and Pentagram took heavy rock to new heights, The Graviators caught the ear of Swedish label Transubstans who signed them in early 2009. On December 11th, The Graviators self titled debut hit the stores.
In December 2010 they had the great honor of supporting the American doom legends Saint Vitus on their European tour, which took the bands through eight countries.
At the end of 2011 The Graviators were approached by Austrian record label Napalm Records, who signed the band to a wordwide record deal. The Graviators will release the second album in the fall of 2012 on Napalm Records.
There is a new 70’s doom rock band in town. The band in question is Noctum and while their sound seems to come as second nature they do an amazing job in recapturing a magical era in rock music, but aren’t a copy of bands of the past but are excellent inspired songwriters.
It’s not all old-school hippie rock worship though, Noctum have large doses of the N.W.O.B.H.M in their sound, especially bands like Diamond Head and Witchfinder General. The 70’s angle that they project so wonderfully well comes in the form of the style originally created by Black Widow, Coven, early Pentagram and of course Black Sabbath.
Noctum was recently signed by Metal Blade Records and are busy recording their second full length album.
Orcus Chylde was born in autumn 2009. Started in a city of Aschaffenburg,
the German sextet stamps an exclamation point with their recently released
debut album and its multifaceted, intelligent melodic compositions. Within
their strong, epic, and dark music they combine hypnotic guitar riffs,
driving euphoric solos, and spherical, vintage Hammond organ sounds with
very distinct and melancholic vocals.
The entire sound is supplemented by a massive, punchy rhythm duo.Orcus Chylde are rooted in the psychedelic and progressive heavy rock and Krautrock of the 70ies.
Baroness formed in 2003 in Savannah, GA, comprised of a group of friends who grew up together in Lexington, VA, a small town in the Blue Ridge Mountains.
Shortly after their formation, the band released two EPs and a split EP with Unpersons entitled respectively, First, Second and A Grey Sigh in a Flower Husk. From their origin right through the release of these EPs, BARONESS toured non-stop throughout America and Europe, building up a steady underground fan base.
In late 2006, the band began working on their first proper full-length, and debut for Relapse, Red Album. Recorded by Philip Cope (Kylesa), the album was a big step forward from the band’s earlier material; they began to develop a sense of melody and song structure as a counter-balance to the EP’s brute intensity. The release of Red Album saw the band touring world-wide and year-round for the next two years. The record received high critical praise, eventually garnering the #1 Album-of-the-Year slot in Revolver Magazine
In between tours, and exactly two years after writing Red Album, BARONESS returned to the studio to record a follow-up record. The band enlisted the help of Grammy-nominated engineer/producer John Congleton (Explosions in the Sky, St. Vincent, Black Mountain, etc.). In 2009, Relapse released Blue Record, another comprehensive step forward for the band’s ever-evolving sound. The record continued the band’s growing sense of melody while directing the focus to an “album-as-an-art-form” concept. Blue Record was named 2009’s Album-of-the-Year by Decibel Magazine, and made an impact on the Best-Of lists in publications as varied as Pitchfork, Village Voice, PopMatters, Revolver, Rock Sound and Metal Hammer.
BARONESS’ mission statement has always been simple: keep an open mind, confront challenges, avoid repetition and take the music to diverse audiences. BARONESS toured constantly and extensively for two years straight with Blue Record, sharing the stage with such bands as METALLICA, MASTODON, DEFTONES, and ISIS. The band also played a variety of festivals, including Coachella (US), Oya (Norway), Bonnaroo (US) and Soundwave (AUS).
Baroness took the year off in 2011 for the first time in nearly a decade in order to focus on writing a new and more challenging third full-length. After a year of writing and refining, the band entered Water Music Studios in Hoboken, NJ with co-producer John Congleton to record Yellow & Green. Tracked in both Hoboken and Congleton’s own Elmwood Studio in Dallas, TX, the new full-length will be released on July 17th.
Morkobot is a totally suggestive instrumental sonic monster. A magmatic and liquid atmosphere lead the listener to a psychedelic and caotic world in which vibrations become dense like glue, light and darkness are continuosly turning in a nonstop changing lysergic noise: moments of raw power suddenly replace those with softer, deliberate arrangements, and viceversa.
Musically, this italian trio is the perfect middle point between robotic mechanisms (the term ‘robot rock’ comes to mind) and organic humanity.
2011 marks the return of MoRkObOt, bringing forth their heaviest, most focused and most adventurous music ever. Enter, Morbo…
After the previous one track album Morto, Morbo (latin for disease) consists of seven cacophonous songs in which the psychedelic attitude of the first Trilogy (Morkobot – Mostro – Morto albums) is dried to expose the bones and nerves of a more intricate, but at the same time more straightforward and focused music, skilfully assembled by the two bass guitars and drum-kit. The result is a raw yet complex low-end sound, interesting to hear as the spectrum of it becomes pure and essential so that Morbo will modify quickly the way You’re used to hear music…

Glowsun is a music band created in 1997 in Lille and its surroundings, north of France.
in 2004 the real line-up will be completed by Ronan Chiron (ex-guitarist of Attack of the Mutant Camels) who then becomes the bass player.
Since the beginning of 2008, the band has already spent a long time recording and mastering what would be their first album and it’s actually Buzzville Records who signs Glowsun. This first album is finally named « The Sundering ». The lyrics are about man’s large unsuitability for his own environment.
Glowsun represents sunlight before its own extinction and the end of mankind.
Contemporary Record Store Section: Stonerrock. Colour Haze are a modern Psychedelic (in the words sense) Heavy Rock Three Piece, in the tradition of classic Rock-Trios as Cream, The Jimi Hendrix Experience or Grand Funk Railroad. Founded somewhen in the last century, the current line-up consists since May 1999. Since then some records have been made and a lot of following was gained. Originating from Muenchen, Germany, the group did a lot of shows nationwide and in Belgium, Holland and Austria. Soon Colour Haze established themselves among the finest groups of Germanys underground scene and are said to be one of the most outstanding current Rock-Ensembles in Europe.
This year´s XXL Tour will present Colour Haze in their element. The band was never easy to pin down on a curfew, so there you have it: a set of at least 3 hours, accompanied by colour-hazy lights and visual-installations. If there is a band to pull it off, this is the one!
Luis Simões from Portugal has been heading the one man band Saturnia for over 15 years.
Guitars, organ, bass, drums, pedals and synths all blend into one gigantic Spacerock-Comet. Think Pink Flyod’s “Echoes” updated for the new millenium.
